The 39-year-old has just come to the end of a four-year stint in France where he was responsible for backs and skills coaching.

The Australian will take up his new position next month.

"We are very pleased to have appointed someone of the calibre and experience of Steve Meehan," said Bath chief executive Bob Calleja.

Meehan started his coaching career in Queensland in 1999 and has worked as Queensland under-19 selector and Brisbane head coach.

He joined Stade in 2002 and during his time at the club, they reached the French championship final three years running, winning it twice.

Meehan has served under Nick Mallett and then Fabien Galthie at Stade.

"The timing to leave Paris was right. I had four years with the side and it's a different culture there to here," he said.

"I had the opportunity to work with Stade in the Heineken Cup where we played a few English teams so I have got a bit of background and history of the teams here."

Bath are looking for a new coaching team after losing head coach Brian Ashton, forwards coach Michael Foley and skills coach Richard Graham at the end of the season.

The club are closing in on appointing Australian Mark Bakewell as forwards coach but are awaiting news on a work permit.

The players returned to pre-season training on Monday and despite being without a senior management team, Calleja is confident the new structure is coming together.

"While the position of our forwards coach is still subject to a work permit, we are happy that Steve and the fitness coaches will provide the players with all they need as pre-season training begins," Calleja added.
