London Irish loosened Wasps' grip on their Premiership crown by stunning the champions in a compelling encounter of 14 tries, nine of them to the Exiles. Wasps led 19-10 after five tries in 12 minutes, but Irish scored three in a row to lead 29-19 before Tom Voyce's second try made it 29-29 at half-time.
His hat-trick score put Wasps in front but Mike Catt and an interception try from Delon Armitage put Irish 43-34 up.
Late tries from Topsy Ojo and Rikki Flutey sealed a remarkable victory.
It leaves Wasps, who have slipped to fourth place, facing a hazardous trip to Gloucester, two points behind them, in their final match next Saturday, needing to win to ensure they qualify for the play-off semi-finals.
But Irish, who leapfrog Wasps into third, secured their own top-four spot and entertain Saracens next week with a home semi-final at stake after ending Wasps' 20-match unbeaten home record stretching back to January 1995.
There was barely a minute on the clock when Dominic Feau'nati, switched to centre, powered over for the first of nine first-half tries.
But Ayoola Erinle - profiting from the first of several inspired Stuart Abbott interventions - and Voyce's opener swiftly made it 12-5 before Ojo grabbed a second for Irish.
Jeremy Staunton then danced past Armitage's weak tackle, Mark van Gisbergen's conversion making it 19-10 after just 12 minutes.
But fly-half Flutey, wing Sailosi Tagicakibau - from a sublime Catt pass - and lock Bob Casey all crossed in a nine-minute spell, Catt adding two conversions for a 29-19 lead.
But Irish lost hooker David Paice to the sin-bin, and Wasps profited to the tune of 15 points in his absence, either side of the interval.
Van Gisbergen landed a penalty and converted a Voyce interception score before the England wing grabbed his third on the resumption to put Wasps 34-29 ahead.
But Catt stretched his creaking limbs to collect Flutey's chip, and another interception try for Armitage put them in command with half an hour left.
Van Gisbergen landed a penalty to bring Wasps back to six points, but Irish refused to be bowed and Flutey's superb penalty with three minutes left took them clear before Ojo and Flutey crowned a stunning win.
Wasps coach Shaun Edwards:
"It's very concerning and we'll see what we're made of against Gloucester (next Saturday) "It will be a test of tactics, discipline, mental toughness, football intelligence and bottle.
"We've never had nine scored against us and eight of them came from turn-overs. Defensively this game was a nightmare."
London Irish coach Brian Smith:
"It was an extraordinary performance and we're very proud of the team. "In the past we've had a strong defence and didn't have to score too many tries to win games.
"We're letting in more now but we're prepared to pay that price if we can continue to score more."
