Gloucester secured a place in next season's Heineken Cup and kept alive their hopes of a top-four finish with a bonus-point win at relegated Leeds.

Fly-half Ryan Lamb opened the scoring with a penalty and made it 10-0 when he converted Mike Tindall's opening try.

Leeds hit back with a score from wing Tom Biggs, Gordon Ross converting to reduce the half-time deficit to 10-7.

But second-half tries from Andy Hazell, Peter Richards and James Simpson-Daniel emphasised Gloucester's superiority.

It was Leeds' 16th Premiership defeat of the season, on the day that long-serving director of rugby Phil Davies announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

But improving Gloucester leapfrog London Irish into fourth spot - at least until the Exiles take on Wasps later on Sunday - and are only a point adrift of Wasps, who they entertain in the final round of matches next Saturday.

The Tykes, meanwhile, complete their sorry season away to Newcastle.

  • Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington:
"It is a sad way for Phil (Davies) to end his association with the club, but if you look at the whole organisation it's in a position of strength.

"The numbers of young players coming through and the strength of the Academy, as well as the crowd growth and corporate growth, have all been things that Phil has been at the heart of. That will be his legacy.

"Unfortunately the shop window which is the first team has performed abysmally this season."

  • Gloucester head coach Dean Ryan:
"I've got mixed emotions really because it's clear we're creating lots of chances but not finishing them all.

"We've got to keep the youthful exuberance but listen to the experience that's around.

"I can't help but be enthused by up to 12 try-scoring opportunities but at the same time frustrated we only scored four."
