Bristol 16-19 Northampton
Bruce Reihana helps Ben Cohen celebrate his winning try

Northampton staged a dramatic fightback with three tries in the last 10 minutes to secure a Heineken Cup place.

The Saints appeared to be out of it when they trailed 16-0 late on but the game changed when replacement Bristol hooker Neil Clark was sin-binned.

Half-time replacement Steve Thompson crashed over, Sean Lamont added another try and Ben Cohen scored seven minutes into injury-time to snatch victory.

Bristol led 16-0 via a Marco Stanojevic try and three Jason Strange penalties.

Their forwards dominated most of the match, and dug deep to try to close the game down after Lamont sliced through a gap to get Saints within reach.

But England wing Cohen had the final word to clinch the four points Northampton needed to guarantee Heineken Cup qualification, Bruce Reihana kicking his second conversion.

Saints will join Sale Sharks, Leicester, Wasps, London Irish and Gloucester as the six Guinness Premiership representative in Europe's showpiece club competition next term.

And despite the galling manner of defeat, Bristol can reflect on a satisfying first season surviving back in the Premiership.

There was, however, a concern over prospective England scrum-half Shaun Perry, who suffered a hamstring problem.

Although he played on for the entire game, he finished with his left leg heavily strapped, but Bristol coach Richard Hill has no doubts he should tour Australia.

"I think Shaun would certainly rise to the challenge," he said. "I think he has got more all-round ability than any other scrum-half in the country."

  • Bristol coach Richard Hill:
"We pummelled Northampton for 70 minutes, but despite having a foot on the throat, we let them off the hook.

"Perhaps I got a bit too sentimental by making substitutions when I did, taking off the front row and our captain, who were all given great receptions by the crowd, and while Northampton kept their concentration, we didn't.

"We relaxed too early, which is something you can't do in this league. Teams can score three tries in quick succession against you, and that is what happened."

  • Northampton coach Paul Grayson:
"We knew that there were about nine minutes left on the stadium countdown clock, and I sent a message out telling the players that if we got one score I felt we would get at least a bonus point out of the game.

"I would be a liar if I said I was hugely convinced we would win the game, because to be honest, there was 71 minutes of nothing.

"The boys have worked impressively hard, but I don't know today if we got stage-fright or whatever. All I know is that if we hit a purple patch, then we have the players to score tries.

"To qualify for the Heineken Cup has been a goal of ours all season."
