Wilkinson has played three halves of rugby in six months |
Newcastle director of rugby Rob Andrew has reiterated that Jonny Wilkinson going on England's tour to Australia is "totally out of the question." Wilkinson had his third run-out for the Falcons against Worcester on Saturday after coming on for the second half.
"He needs a fantastic pre-season and a great two months leading into the autumn internationals," Andrew said.
"He is still very sore. It is not about the next two months, but getting this guy right for the next five years."
Wilkinson again required treatment against Worcester, and Andrew said his full recovery from a recurring groin injury will need careful managing. "We have to coach it very carefully and get it right in the summer," Andrew said. "Basically, it gets a bit sore.
"I don't think Jonny would want to go on tour, to be honest. That's me
speaking on his behalf and not him speaking.
"If you have seen what I have seen in the last three weeks, you will know
this guy is a class act.
"He is a world-class player and he's been back for only three lots of 40
minutes in the last few weeks. That is all he's played this season.
"As a player of the highest standing, you cannot put yourself on a level
which will make you exposed. You have to be spot-on for this sort of thing."
Wilkinson made his sixth comeback since the 2003 World Cup against Sale two weeks ago, and also played 40 minutes against London Irish last weekend.
He has not played for England since his winning drop-goal against Australia in Sydney.
