A Bruce Reihana penalty deep into injury time helped Northampton to a nail-biting Premiership win over Leeds. The game looked destined for a draw when Danny Care pulled Leeds back into the contest in the 77th minute.
But Saints piled on the pressure before winning a penalty which Reihana nonchalantly slotted over.
The lead regularly changed hands throughout the game, Tom Biggs twice scoring for Leeds, and Sean Lamont and Jon Clarke going over for the hosts.
Northampton made an impressive start, Clarke slicing open the Tykes defence before finding Reihana, but the Kiwi's pass to Ben Cohen was intercepted.
The visitors cracked in the seventh minute with a sublime chip from the outside of Spencer's boot finding Lamont, who raced home.
But Leeds were back on level terms when Biggs won the sprint for Roland De Marigny's grubber, touching down in the corner.
Wing Andre Snyman broke several tackles in the 28th minute to carry Leeds deep into opposition territory and when Saints infringed, Gordon Ross kicked the penalty.
A magnificent weaving solo try from 21-year-old winger Biggs extended the Tykes lead.
But Saints hit back before the break, David Quinlan opening up a hole in Leeds' defence and slipping a pass to Reihana who dashed in under the posts.
Cohen lit up the start of the second half with a 30-yard break from his own half but the England winger was then forced off after being struck by Justin Marshall, who was sin-binned.
Northampton lock Damien Browne was then held up over the line before the alert Ross saved a pushover try by diving on the ball just as Saints' scrum crossed the line.
A long-range Spencer penalty increased Northampton's lead to five points, but Leeds were not finished yet.
Substitute scrum-half Care darted over four minutes into injury time, but Ross missed the conversion which would have put Leeds ahead.
But it did not matter anyway as Reihana still had time to clinch victory with his penalty in the 88th minute.
Gloucester coach Paul Grayson:
"It was an exciting finish if nothing else. Even though the score was close towards the end I thought we looked comfortable. I thought we could score again.
"But maybe we have become over-confident recently because we switched off and once they scored it was wide open. We went slightly off-message in the second half.
"We've gone through January unbeaten and all credit to the players for that. In some of those games we've played well and in some we've played ugly."
Leeds director of rugby Phil Davies:
"My watch is pretty accurate so I knew what time was left. But there was a little bit of confusion apparently.
"There was something going wrong with the timekeeper - there was confusion over how many minutes were left. It's disappointing."
