Sale overturned a nine-point deficit to seal Harlequins' relegation from the Zurich Premiership and win themselves a place in the play-offs.

Tries from Jeremy Staunton and James Hayter gave Quins a 12-0 lead before Steve Hanley hit back for the Sharks.

Gavin Duffy completed a sweeping move to make it 19-10 to Quins at half-time.

But a Mark Cueto try and Charlie Hodgson conversion gave the visitors the lead before Staunton missed a late penalty to win the game for Quins.

Quins made a blistering start and Staunton dummied and skipped over with only three minutes on the clock before adding the extra points.

Hooker Hayter then rumbled over on 12 minutes, referee Pearson awarding the try despite the video replay proving inconclusive.

With hooker Sebastien Bruno struggling with his throwing, Sale's backs were living off scraps but winger Hanley waltzed over from close range on 17 minutes to make it 12-5.

Hodgson slotted the conversion and added a penalty while Staunton sliced a three-pointer wide in response.

However, Quins full-back Duffy capitalised on a fine counter from Simon Keogh and a deft off-load from George Harder five minutes before the break.

Hodgson made it 19-13 after the interval while the introduction of hooker Andy Titterrell and lock Chris Jones leant Sale more stability.

But Staunton slotted a penalty to make it 22-13 on 48 minutes before some ill-disciplined play by Jim Evans gifted Hodgson a penalty 11 minutes later.

Sale full-back Cueto then shrugged off a weak Will Greenwood tackle to score 13 minutes from the end and Hodgson edged the visitors ahead for the first time in the match.

Staunton had a chance to save Quins five minutes from the end but pulled a relatively straight-forward penalty wide.
