The battle to beat the drop
QuinsTykesExilesSaintsWarriorsNews image

The Zurich Premiership's bottom five clubs will go into the final day of the season fighting for their top-flight lives.

Worcester and Northampton, who meet at Sixways in a potential 'loser goes down' clash, Leeds, London Irish and Harlequins are all guaranteed a nerve-wracking final day.

We assess each club's prospects as D-day beckons.

HARLEQUINS

Quins appeared to be clear of trouble after victories over Bath and Newcastle, having lost their first seven Premiership fixtures of the season.

REMAINING FIXTURE
30 Apr: Sale Sharks (h)

But Tuesday's calamitous 21-10 defeat at Leeds, coupled with disappointing results against Northampton and London Irish, means they are now bottom with just a home game against Sale to come.

Prospects: Looking vulnerable now after that shattering loss to the Tykes, but beating Sale should ensure survival.

LEEDS

Six defeats in seven Premiership outings left Leeds looking doomed, but wins over Leicester, Gloucester and now Harlequins have given them a good chance of beating the drop.

REMAINING FIXTURE
30 Apr: Bath (a)
The Powergen Cup winners travel to Bath for their final game buoyed by recent successes.

But Bath will be out to avenge that Cup final defeat, and results could still go against Leeds.

Prospects: Director of rugby Phil Davies has already shown his nous to keep the Tykes in the race, and he should now take the fight to the wire.

LONDON IRISH

The Exiles were contemplating a tilt at the play-offs in the autumn but five successive Premiership defeats dragged them into the danger zone.

REMAINING FIXTURE
30 Apr: Newcastle (a)
A bonus-point victory at Saracens relieved the pressure, but three more defeats - including a costly home loss to Gloucester - left them anxiously looking over their shoulders.

A win over Quins seemed to ease the worries but their nail-biting loss to Bath last time out has put them right back in the mire leaving them with a nerve-wracking trip to Newcastle on the final day.

Prospects: The pressure is back on and the Exiles will have to draw on their famed spirit to recover quickly from the Bath heartbreak.

NORTHAMPTON

Saints were on the verge of securing their place among the elite under Budge Pountney after a disastrous run of eight defeats cost Alan Solomons his job as director of rugby.

REMAINING FIXTURE
30 Apr: Worcester (a)
Three successive victories over Leicester, Gloucester and Harlequins - via a converted injury-time try - hauled them off the bottom.

But for a last-minute Jonny Wilkinson penalty drifting wide at Franklin's Gardens last Friday, giving them a one-point win over Newcastle, they would be seriously up to their necks.

Prospects: Saints would be the biggest casualty of the lot, and with Leeds beating Quins in their penultimate match, Saints and Tykes will be most at risk on the final day.

WORCESTER

Three successive victories over Leeds, Harlequins and Sale catapulted Worcester from bottom spot to within touching distance of safety.

REMAINING FIXTURE
30 Apr: Northampton (h)
Two subsequent defeats, including a single-point loss to Saracens, left them looking up at the rest again but a win at Newcastle revived their hopes.

At least their task has been clarified after a fighting defeat at Wasps in their penultimate match. If they beat Northampton on the final day, they will stay up.

Prospects: Have made an excellent fist of their first season in the elite, and a good bet to avoid an immediate return to the National League.
