An injury-time drop goal from Brad Davies gave Gloucester a dramatic win in the West country derby against Bath. The hosts took the lead with a Terry Fanolua try after 13 minutes but Bath hit back through James Scaysbrook's try and led 10-8 at the break.
Bath took a 16-14 lead with 15 minutes to go as Henry Paul and Chris Malone traded penalties, before Davies stepped up to seal victory.
Gloucester's win was marred by England prop Phil Vickery breaking his wrist.
Gloucester opened the scoring after 13 minutes when Terry Fanolua muscled his way over the try line after a break from Paul, who missed the conversion.
Bath hit back when flanker Scaysbrook scored after a lineout and Malone's conversion nudged them 7-5 in front.
Paul and Malone then landed three penalties apiece and as the game entered injury time it looked as though Bath would head home with the points.
However, Davies, on as a late replacement, came to the rescue for Gloucester with a drop goal two minutes into injury time to seal victory.
Bath coach John Connolly was philosophical after the late setback.
"I must be disappointed this ended in defeat but I am very happy with the way we played and the effort we put into the game," he said.
The two sides meet again next month in the Powergen Cup semi-finals.
