Wasps 23-11 Saracens
Tom Voyce touches down for Wasps under pressure from Richard Haughton

Tries: Voyce, Waters

Saracens 11 (6)
Try: Skirving
Pens: Jackson 2
Champions Wasps began the defence of their Premiership title with a hard-earned victory at Twickenham.

Tom Voyce's try helped them to a 10-6 interval lead, but Ben Skirving's score on the resumption briefly restored Sarries' advantage, after they led 6-0.

But two more penalties from Mark van Gisbergen, who kicked 13 points in all, restored Wasps' command.

They could have scored more tries before Stuart Abbott put replacement Fraser Waters over to seal it late on.

It completed a successful return to action for both England centres, who missed most of last season through injury.

Saracens, still waiting on the injured Andy Farrell, opened an early lead as fly-half Glen Jackson landed two penalties.

We need another year or two of consolidation before we can beat the likes of Wasps or Leicester

They drove Wasps backwards and caused problems in the scrum, but barring the odd flash from Thomas Castaignede, lacked creativity.

Wasps might have scored when Matt Purdy claimed a Saracens line-out but lost the ball forward on the line, suffering a serious head cut in the process.

Van Gisbergen reduced the arrears with his first shot at goal after 26 minutes and Wasps began to crank up the pressure.

Joe Worsley launched a perfect kick which pinned Saracens back into their own 22 and Voyce jinked his way through a broken defensive line to score.

Van Gisbergen converted and then produced a try-saving tackle on Castaignede before failing with an attempted drop-goal before half-time.

Wasps wing Paul Sackey was held up over the line in the last action of the half, and later made a hash of a golden chance when he spilled a Waters pass a yard from the line.

Saracens started the second half well and number eight Skirving galloped through Sackey's challenge for a try within three minutes.

Jackson missed the touchline conversion but Van Gisbergen was spot on with two penalties from distance as Wasps worked themselves back into the lead.

Lions and England scrum-half Matt Dawson came off the bench with 15 minutes remaining and began to direct traffic brilliantly as Wasps camped inside the Saracens half.

Wasps were denied again when Sackey sparked an 80-metre counter-attack and Sarries prop Kevin Yates was sin-binned for deliberately preventing a likely try.

But Abbott's break ignited another attack and his beautifully weighted pass allowed Waters to seal victory.

  • Wasps director of rugby Ian McGeechan:
"You have had two quality players not playing for so long and when they come back they bring freshness.

"To see them (Abbott and Waters) back and playing well is excellent. We feel we had a good pre-season and we wanted to start well.

"Our attitude was superb and on a hot day the players kept working hard."

  • Saracens director of rugby Steve Diamond:
"A lot of people think we will be in the top four.

"But we have been in the doldrums for so long we need another year or two of consolidation before we can beat the likes of Wasps or Leicester.

"We kept them under pressure but we needed that little bit more composure. We didn't show what we could do."
