Saturday's defeat to Worcester left Saints just one point off the bottom of the Zurich Premiership table.

Former captain Budge Pountney and fly-half Paul Grayson will take temporary charge alongside the rest of the current coaching staff.

Captain Corne Krige, appointed by Solomons, has stepped down from the role but remains as a player.

The former Springboks captain said he felt he could no longer remain in the position after Solomons' departure.

"I am a great fan of Corne Krige but he has decided he should stand down as he was appointed by Alan Solomons," said Saints chairman Keith Barwell.

"Alan is a great coach but for whatever reason it has not worked out.

"The board feel it is now the appropriate time to make a change in the coaching structure."

Pountney and Grayson will join forwards coach Adrian Kennedy, skills coach Frank Ponissi and technical analyst Paul Larkin in preparing the team for Sunday's fixture at Newcastle.

"Saints now need to look within themselves but the club will be combing the world for another head coach," Barwell added.

"However, the ideal would be that our new temporary coaching set-up works out."

Solomons arrived at Franklin's Gardens from Ulster at the end of last season to replace Wayne Smith.

But the experienced coach has struggled to replicate his success in South Africa and Ireland.

The Saints were joint leaders of the Premiership after winning their opening two games, but subsequently lost their next eight.

Their domestic form contrasts sharply with the Heineken Cup, where they won their opening two fixtures.
