A late Leicester rally denied Wasps victory in a tight contest as the Tigers salvaged a draw in High Wycombe.

The hosts led 17-7 inside the final quarter but an Andy Goode penalty and an Austin Healey try three minutes from time, converted by Goode, levelled it.

Wasps led 6-0 early on with two Ed Thrower penalties before Tom Varndell's converted try put Leicester in front.

Mark van Gisbergen's try gave Wasps an 11-7 half-time lead but two more Thrower penalties were not enough.

Thrower had the chance to secure the game with 10 minutes left but missed with a further penalty attempt.

But Leicester "got out of jail" - according to coach John Wells - as the first of three meetings between the sides - they meet home and away in the Heineken Cup next month - ended in stalemate.

Both sides were shorn of several regulars on international duty, but former England captains Lawrence Dallaglio and Martin Johnson ensured there was no lack of bite.

Wasps shaded the opening quarter before teenage wing Varndell scorched in from the blind side and dummied inside Van Gisbergen for his fourth try in three Premiership outings.

But Wasps hit back when Matt Dawson and Dallaglio combined from a scrum and Peter Richards and Ayoola Erinle put Van Gisbergen over.

Both sides struggled for rhythm after the break in an increasingly scrappy battle and Johnson escaped with a ticking off after impeding Erinle in midfield.

Thrower punished two Leicester infringements but Goode kept the Tigers in it with a long-range effort from wide on the left.

After a series of close-range lineouts, Johnson and Daryl Gibson thundered into the Wasps defence before the ball was switched back to Healey, who judged his diagonal run to perfection.
