A last-minute try from Olly Barkley sealed the narrowest of wins for Bath despite some valiant Leeds defence.

Leeds had led for much of the second half and looked on course to win before Barkley scored and Chris Malone converted before the final whistle.

It was one of two tries for Barkley, who came off the field with a tally of 17 points.

Leeds scored tries through Chris Bell, Jon Dunbar and Andre Snyman, while Tim Stimpson kicked 13 points.

Leeds boss Phil Davies said he was "devastated" after the defeat.

He said: "With 40 seconds to go we should have shown more control. We did really well to get to 28-20 in front but we were very disappointing from then on.

"When we did get out of the 22 we gave it away in midfield. It's really frustrating but at least we got a bonus point."

Olly Barkley will keep getting better and better

It was a pulsating contest from the outset when Leeds flanker Dan Hyde was sin-binned within the first minute for illegal use of the boot.

In his absence, Bath went ahead through Rob Fidler after a well-worked line-out.

Stimpson kept Leeds in the hunt with two penalties and helped put his side in front after a telling break down the right flank. From the resulting melee, Bell pounced to score.

The score gave Leeds a 13-10 lead at the break but that was quickly quashed when Barkley held onto a deft pass from Dunbar. Barkley duly converted his own score.

But the game turned once more in the 48th minute when James Scaysbrook was given his temporary marching orders for pulling down at the back of the line-out.

Snyman made them pay immediately with a neatly crafted try.

Stimpson missed his chance to level the game with the resulting conversion, but Leeds again made the most of Scaysbrook's absence when Dunbar drove over from the back of a line-out.

Penalties were exchanged to give Leeds a five-point lead, which they looked set to maintain after some excellent tackling.

But Barkley's late burst and an assured conversion for Malone stole the win.

"Olly Barkley will keep getting better and better," said Bath coach John Connolly. "He's bigger than you think, he's durable and courage is not a problem."
