Johnson has agreed a one-year extension to his deal with the Tigers |
Leicester captain Martin Johnson says he is committed to helping his side into Europe next season by qualifying via the Zurich Wildcard games. The Tigers play Harlequins on Saturday, and Johnson said he wants to end his Leicester career by playing in Europe.
"I've agreed another year here so I know I have one more season. Hopefully we'll do well," he told BBC Sport.
"We want to be right up there at the end and competing for the trophies. I'm not really looking beyond that."
But the 6ft 9in second rower said he was not taking anything for granted ahead of Saturday's match.
"It's that time of year when you have got to finish off the season and finish it off well," said Johnson.
"We have got to try and qualify for Europe so we'll hopefully go out and win at the weekend and go on from there.
The former England captain Martin Johnson also spokes about England's 2007 World Cup pairing with South Africa, saying it was as tough a draw as the World Cup holders could have faced.
Sir Clive Woodward's side will face the Springboks in three years time, with two qualifiers making up the group of four in France.
"It is going to be a huge game."
"Considering England were winners I thought they would have had a slightly easier passage, but it all depends on form coming up to the tournament."
Johnson was promoting Sport Relief 2004, the BBC and Comic Relief charity for which he is an ambassador, in the wake of Wednesday's World Cup draw in Dublin.
He added: "It's a different tournament and a different team at a different time, but it seems strange to be talking about the next one with three-and-a-half years to go and they will cross that bridge when they come to it.
"You have got to beat everyone to win the World Cup."
