Leicester's Zurich Premiership top scorer Andy Goode faces six weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury. The fly-half, who has racked up 50 points in just three matches, was injured during the Tigers' 39-22 win over London Irish on Sunday.
He has been diagnosed with a ligament problem and is unlikely to play again until November.
Ross Broadfoot is set to replace Goode for Saturday's East Midlands derby against Northampton at Welford Road.
Goode could potentially miss four Premiership games, and the injury also threatens his participation in opening Heineken Cup matches against Italians Calvisano and French side Biarritz.
"Losing Andy is exactly what we didn't want. He was making a significant impact through his distribution, his breaks and his kicking," said Leicester coach John Wells.
"But this is a good chance for Ross. He did well in pre-season, and we've got 100% confidence in him," Wells told the Leicester Mercury.
