Mallinder rues 'naivety'
Newcastle's Joe Shaw holds off a tackle from Sale wing Steve Hanley
Sale head coach Jim Mallinder lamented his side's "naivety" after their 37-33 defeat in the Powergen Cup final.

"Our performance wasn't brilliant," he said. "We didn't play at our best.

"There were two similar sides both intent on playing good attacking rugby but we had a couple of opportunities that we didn't take.

"We were probably a bit naive and didn't get out of our half as well as we should have done, and that ultimately cost us the game."

Mallinder added: "We always knew it was going to be one of those games and it was a real see-saw affair.

"I suppose they just got that little bit extra luck."
