Sale Sharks have suffered an early defeat as they prepare for the new season, losing 35-13 to Perpignan. The French side scored five tries, while the visitors could manage only one by James Moores and converted by US fly-half Mike Hercus.
Charlie Hodgson scored Sale's other points with two penalties.
Sharks head coach Nick Johnson said: "The players worked hard and the first game of any new campaign is always going to be difficult."
He added: "The game was played in four twenty minute quarters as we made sure that many of the players received quality game time."
