Saints turn to Solomons
I have enjoyed every minute since arriving in Belfast
Alan Solomons
Ulster director of rugby Alan Solomons has been confirmed as the new coach of Zurich Premiership side Northampton.

The South African steps into the void left by Kiwi Wayne Smith, who leaves at the end of the season to become part of the All Blacks coaching team.

Solomons, 54, will bring Ulster forwards coach Adrian Kennedy with him to Franklin's Gardens.

"I look forward to the new challenge but will also leave Ulster with a heavy heart," said the former defence lawyer.

"I have enjoyed every minute since arriving in Belfast."

Northampton operations director John Steele said: "We carried out a thorough search for Wayne's successor and Alan has proved himself to be strong in all the areas."

"Although Alan's focus will remain with Ulster until the end of the season, he will be very much involved in moulding the Saints squad for next year."

Solomons is responsible for resurrecting the fortunes of Ulster.

The former Springbok assistant coach guided them to inaugural Celtic Cup success in December and they presently lead the Celtic League.

My accepting this new role in no way undervalues how much Saints means to me
Wayne Smith
Smith will team up with Wales coach Steve Hansen as part of Graham Henry's coaching set-up with New Zealand.

"It has been an absolute privilege to work with Saints. This is a special club with extraordinary fans and a great group of players," said Smith.

"I will never forget my time here. My accepting this new role in no way undervalues how much Saints means to me.

"However, I love the All Blacks. I have been striving to play for them or coach them for a large part of my life."
