Sanderson will work with Hopley |
Harlequins flanker Pat Sanderson has been appointed chairman of the Professional Rugby Players' Association. The England international, who played in the pre-Christmas match against the New Zealand Barbarians, becomes the first active player to hold the post.
He succeeds Damian Hopley, the PRA's full-time chief executive officer.
"I feel very strongly about player welfare, and improving our working conditions," said Sanderson.
 | I believe 100% in the PRA's cause |
Sanderson has won six England caps, three on the 'Tour from Hell' to Australia and New Zealand in 1998 and the others in North America in the summer of 2001. "Whilst many people see the glamour of a career in professional sports, there are many pitfalls that all players need to be prepared for."
Hopley added: "This is a key appointment in the evolution of the PRA.
"Pat has been in first-class rugby for a long time, and has the respect of his peers throughout the game.
"I look forward to working alongside him and all the players in safeguarding the future of the players and the sport."
