Pountney will miss the start of the season |
Northampton's Zurich Premiership hopes have been dealt an early blow after the club revealed their co-captain Budge Pountney has broken his leg.
Pountney fractured his left leg after falling awkwardly during a pre-season game against Cardiff Blues last Friday.
The Saints skipper is now undergoing specialist treatment, although there are no indications at this stage how long he will be out of the game.
The news is a huge blow for Saints coach Wayne Smith, who regards Pountney as a key player in their quest to win the Premiership.
"I haven't seen a better number seven in Europe," Smith told this website at the end of last season.
"He's a real warrior and the bravest man you will ever meet. Budge is our leader on the pitch."
Pountney retired from international rugby last season, making him a central figure for Saints while Test players are away during the World Cup period.
He will certainly miss their opening game of the season at Sale on 12 September.
