Smith has not played for five months |
Leicester centre Ollie Smith will step up his bid for an England World Cup place by appearing for the Tigers in Saturday's Middlesex Sevens. The talented 20-year-old made a promising Test debut during the Six Nations victory over Italy at Twickenham in March.
But he promptly sustained a shoulder injury in a Zurich Premiership match which ruled him out for the rest of the season.
Smith, part of England's preliminary World Cup training squad, will attempt to prove his fitness ahead of next Saturday's first warm-up Test against Wales.
The Tigers face London Welsh, who replaced injury-hit rugby league side St Helens this week, in the opening round.
 | The British Army will be a tough one - their side will include a few Fijian steppers and they will have pace. |
Saints' absence deprives the traditional season-opening tournament of a rugby league representative, after Bradford Bulls' triumph in last year's event. But there are plenty of high-class performers on show with all 12 Zurich Premiership clubs competing, plus four invitational teams
Gloucester include England sevens star Henry Paul and flying wing Marcel Garvey in their squad, while Northampton include former All Blacks Bruce Reihana and Andrew Blowers.
Halequins have two England sevens regulars in Pat Sanderson and Ugo Moyne, while Newcastle include Hugh Vyvyan, Epi Taione, Michael Stephenson and Ben Gollings.
A British Army side which won last week's Henley International Sevens will start as one of the favourites with a host of Fijian specialists in their ranks.
They take on Gloucester in the opening round, while a Young England side coached by England sevens boss Joe Lydon could be one of the teams to watch.
