Tigers edge past Falcons
Tim Stimpson
Tim Stimpson again proved his worth for Tigers
Leicester 28-21 Newcastle

Twenty points in the final 10 minutes helped Leicester to a spellbinding victory against a resurgent Newcastle on Friday.

The Falcons had Mark Andrews sin-binned and even went down to 13 men when referee Ashley Rowden sent Hugh Vyvyan on his way for fighting.

Newcastle were 18-10 up at half-time and the gap would have been more had the Falcons not given away a soft try when Ramiro Pez charged down Mark Mayerhofler's kick and scored under the posts.

We have gifted Leicester the game by being stupid
Falcons coach Rob Andrew

But the Tigers hit back in a frantic final quarter thanks to late tries from John Holtby and James Hamilton.

The game began rather differently, however, when Warren Britz dived over after a surging drive.

fact here
Ben Gollings added the conversion to an earlier penalty before Mayerhofler freed Michael Stephenson in the corner for Newcastle's second.

The Tigers could only manage a Stimpson three pointer and when Leicester collapsed the scrum in the 35th minute, Gollings' kick made it 18-3.

But then came Pez's moment of brilliance which Stimpson converted to put the Tigers back into the game.

Another Stimpson penalty was followed by Holtby's superb five pointer in the left hand corner and the Leicester full-back's conversion made it 20-18.

Newcastle came down to out-muscle us and we gave them too much respect in the first half
Leicester coach Dean Richards

Andrews was then sent on his way after taking out Louis Deacon in the air and a third Stimpson penalty had the Welford Road faithful back in full voice.

When Vyvyan also left another try looked inevitable and there was no surprise when Hamilton went over to seal the win.
