Bristol finished bottom of the heap |
The final day of the Zurich Premiership league campaign ended with Bath leapfrogging neighbours Bristol to scramble off the bottom of the pile.
It is yet to be decided if Bristol will be relegated - their fate rests on whether officials allow Rotherham to come up and on whether Bristol go ahead and merge with Bath.
At the other end of the table, Northampton edged out Sale for a place in the play-off semi-final.
Elsewhere, Gloucester completed their unbeaten home season on an afternoon whose principal dramas are rounded up below.
Bath 24-12 Newcastle
Bath ensure their Premiership survival with a last-day win that allows them to edge out Bristol on points difference at the foot of the table.
Olly Barkley kicks the game's last penalty but three tries from Iain Balshaw, Tom Voyce and Nathan Thomas - all converted by stand-off Barkley - have already won the day.
For Newcastle, Jonny Wilkinson kicks two penalties and drops two goals, but his effort is not enough to earn the Falcons a Zurich Wildcard place.
Gloucester 31-13 Leicester
Gloucester complete their unbeaten home campaign with a victory over Leicester that denies the deposed champions an automatic Heineken Cup slot.
Tries from Thinus Delport, Tom Beim, Andy Gomarsall and Terry Fanolua are all converted by Ludovic Mercier, who also adds a penalty.
For the Tigers, Geordan Murphy kicks two penalties and converts Fereti Tuilagi's first-half try.
London Irish 41-21 Bristol
Michael Lipman scores a late try for Bristol but it is not enough to prevent them finishing bottom of the Premiership on points difference.
The Shoguns had scored the game's first try through flanker Craig Short but were then blown away by five Irish tries.
Naka Drotske, Rob Hoadley, Geoff Appleford, Paul Sackey and Michael Horak cross for the Exiles, with stand-off Mark Mapletoft converting all five and kicking two penalties.
Northampton 28-6 Leeds
Northampton gatecrash the Premiership's top three thanks to late tries from Steve Thompson and Oriol Ripol combined with Sale's heavy defeat at Saracens.
Two Braam van Straaten penalties sandwiching a Paul Grayson drop goal give Leeds the early advantage before Peter Jorgensen's try gets the Saints bandwagon rolling.
Saracens 34-19 Sale
Two second-half tries from Jason Robinson are not enough to keep Sale in the top three as Saracens snatch the last place in the Zurich Wildcard play-offs.
By the time Robinson makes his mark, Saracens are long out of sight thanks to tries from Joe Ross, Richard Haughton, Darragh O'Mahony and Abdel Benazzi.
All four Sarries tries are converted by Andy Goode, who also notched a penalty, while Sale's only other score is a Dean Schofield try, improved by Nick Walshe.
Wasps 21-25 Harlequins
Harlequins shock Wasps with a comeback victory to qualify for the Wildcard play-offs, thanks to late tries by Matt Powell and Ugo Monye, the latter converted by Paul Burke.
Two penalties and a conversion from Alex King alongside tries by Craig Dowd and Kenny Logan hand Wasps the early edge before Monye's first try begins the Quins revival.
