Leicester Tigers
Welford Road
Capacity: 17,500

Forget Old Trafford, The Maracana or Sardis Rd, there is only one ground that inspires true fear among opposition teams - Welford Rd.

The ground mirrors the team that plays there.

Two sturdy old stands provide the backbone, while a stylish new corporate venture sits opposite the clubhouse, home to the ABC bar and Leicester's prodigious stack of trophies.

Welford Rd is Leicester's fortress, but a surprisingly friendly one - perhaps it's because they're always confident of a win.

  • Where to stand/sit?

The terracing in front of the Crumbie stand is a big favourite with Leicester regulars, generating the ominous cry of 'Tigers' whenever the team get on a roll.

Like the Crumbie, the members stand runs all along the side of the pitch, and provides an all-seated all-covered affair.

By far the smartest place to be seen is the Alliance and Leicester stand, a mixture of corporate and paying customers.

  • Pubs to visit:

Welford Rd proudly boasts an impressive 11 bars, but if you fancy a pub, The Victory is opposite the ground and a favourite with Tigers fans.

Other haunts include The New Rd inn, The Local hero and The Bricklayers, all on the London Rd.

The choice does depend, however, on whether Leicester City FC are playing that Saturday/Sunday.

  • Restaurants:

With its large Asian community, Leicester is a proverbial hot-pot of top Indian restaurants. If it's a quality curry you're after, head for the Belgrave area of the city.

Nearer to home, The Tiffin is recommended by Leicester's staff as a top Indian restaurant. De Montfort St. 0116 2470420.

Stones. One of the more popular restaurants in Leicester, specialising in continental cusine. Millstone lane. 0116 2910004.

  • Top tip

If you are taking the kids to stand at the front of the Crumbie stand, arrive early so they can get a place at the front. The terracing is reasonably shallow.

  • Directions:

Car: from M1/M69, exit at J21. Follow signs to City centre along A5460. Turn right at junction with Up road, three miles on. Welford Rd is half a mile ahead.

The stadium car park has spaces for 100 cars, and there are several car parks in the area. Check if Leicester City are playing as this will make finding a space a lot more difficult.

      Train:

Leicester is well served with trains from the Midlands and London. The stadium is a ten minute walk from the station.

  • Did you know?

Leicester are called the Tigers because the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, nicknamed the "Tigers" provided many of the club's players in their early days.

  • What to do with the other half who hates Rugby?

Thomas Cook opened his first travel office in Leicester and is buried in Welford Road cemetery, close to the Tigers' home ground. As a result, the city rightly claims to be the birthplace of modern tourism. Check Leicester Online's excellent tour for more details.
