London Wasps
Causeway Stadium
Capacity: 10,000

The London club's nomadic existence sees them venture to pastures new for the 2002/03 season.

Having moved from Sudbury - their home in the amateur days - to QPR's Loftus Road, they subsequently upped-sticks again to Wycombe's Causeway Stadium.

Another groundshare with a football club means that Wasps will benefit from excellent facilities.

However, on the downside, match days may lack atmosphere in an area with no rugby background, particularly if the fans do not follow the players to Buckinghamshire on a weekend afternoon.

The ground is two miles from the town centre and the address - Hillbottom Road - is straight out of "Wind in the Willows".

However, in reality the cul-de-sac instead bisects the dour Sands Industrial Estate en route to the ground.

  • Where to stand/sit?

A decent view can be had from anywhere in this modern ground, but the best place to head is the largest stand.

The two-tiered stand was initially known as Woodlands, but like any of the four stands it frequently changes name in lieu of sponsors.

It has the added benefit in that if the rugby gets dull it affords great views of the Chilterns.

  • Pubs to visit:

Local boozers and the Causeway are not often mentioned in the same breath, but the Hourglass (144 Chapel Lane, Sands) is the closest.

Food is usually served, there are three pool tables, video screens and a Juke Box.

That apart it is a choice of those on the West Wycombe Road or all the way back in the town centre.

There are any number of identikit High Street pubs to choose from plus the independent Hobgoblin and Antelope.

  • Restaurants:

Like pubs, restaurants are also pretty thin on the ground near the Causeway, unless you include the luxury of the obligatory burger van.

In the town centre there is a varied selection of eateries including Italian, Chinese and Indian.

Ask (17, High Street), Pizza Express (40, Oxford Street) and Cafe Rouge (1-2, Church Square) represent the usual high street fare.

The Noodlebar (5, Crown Lane) offers something a bit different and is cheap and fast.

As is Spicy Cuisine (12, Frogmoor) which does an excellent range of kebabs among other takeaway offerings.

  • Top tip:

Wrap up warm. When the wind blows down the valley, life in the top tier of the Woodlands Stand can get distinctly uncomfortable.

  • Directions:

Road: Leave the M40 Motorway at junction four and take the A4010 signposted Aylesbury and then follow the signs for Wycombe Wanderers.

Rail: Wycombe is 40 minutes from London on Chiltern Railways. You can catch a bus from the station or opt for a taxi (4).

  • Did you know?

Some parts of the ground are "out of bounds" as the football club signed an agreement that the stadium's capacity would not exceed 10,000.

  • What to do with the other half who hates rugby?

Send her up the road to picturesque Marlow.
