Northampton
Franklins Gardens
Capacity: 11,000

If Franklin were around to see his gardens, the odds are that he would be mightily impressed.

Over the past few years, Northampton's ground has been improved beyond all recognition, boasting three new stands and excellent facilities.

The gardens maintain a blend of modern stands, and comfortable clubhouse, which houses the essential piece of equipment for any rugby, ground - a large bar.

  • Where to stand/sit?

The new Tetley stand and adjoining Saints stand both provide excellent viewpoints for all the action.

As a result of fan-power, the club agreed to build terracing at the base of the Tetleys stand, which is sufficiently steep for a good view to be had.

Those feeling a bit more wealthy may want to take advantage of the padded seats in the Tetleys stand.

  • Pubs to visit:

Franklins Gardens is a good 15-20 minute walk out of town, and while there are plenty of decent pubs in the town-centre, the best bet is to head up the Weedon Rd towards the ground, where you'll find a good few inns.

The Franklins. Recommended by none less than Nick Beal, the Franklins adjoins the ground and is a popular venue for the pre-match tactics conference.

Further down the Weedon Rd lie two unlikely drinking-holes. The Bus club and the St James' working men's club both open their doors on match days.

Opposite the Bus club is The Foundry Tavern, a small and dark establishment covered with rugby paraphernalia.

  • Restaurants:

The Weedon Rd hosts quite a few Indian, Chinese and Fish & chips takeaways, including one that claims to provide 'Pukka pies'. For a sit-down meal, head into town.

Wok Inn. Highly recommended Chinese open from 12.30pm on a Saturday and 12.00 on a Sunday. Try the Crispy Duck. Sheep St. 01604 633666. (25 mins from ground).

Sorentinos. Pasta joint recommended by Saints staff. Gold Lane. 01604 602222. (15 mins).

  • Top tip

The Saints car-park after a match, expect to take half an hour to get out.

  • Directions:

Car: from South, leave the M1 at J15A, heading towards Northampton Town centre. Past the Sixfields stadium take a right off the roundabout onto the A4500. Follow the signs to the ground from the centre.

From the north, take J16 off the M1, and continue along the A45 towards Northampton Town centre.

Train: Northampton is well served with services from London Euston and the Midlands.

  • Did you know?

Northampton are the only Premiership club with a mini-cenotaph beside the pitch, commemorating the players who died in the Second World War.

  • What to do with the other half who hates Rugby?

Northampton was Britain's shoe-making capital, and the town has a museum dedicated to shoes, including the largest collection of footwear in the world.

Work started on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the 11th century, and the building is one of four circular churches in the country.

Wickstead Theme park is a few miles outside the town, perfect for the kid who prefers dodgems to side-steps. 01536 485454.

Northampton Bus terminus. This building is quite the most clinical example of awful buildings, offensive to almost every sense in the body. Definitely worth a visit, and you will be laughing all the way home.
