The Super League champions turned the final into an exhibition, running in six tries against their union opponents.

Last season's runners-up Newcastle lost to London Irish in the main competition but had some consolation in winning the plate final 26-7 against the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment side.

Bradford's victory was even more impressive given that they had been in Super League action against main rivals St Helens on Friday night.

Winning captain Robbie Paul said that the disappointment of defeat to St Helens had spurred them on to victory in the Sevens.

"Our defence was spot on," he said.

Wasps captain Phil Greening also paid tribute to the superior Bradford side.

"When they have got the ball, they know how to pick their gaps - and defensively they know their job," he said.

Bradford looked impressive throughout the tournament with a solid defence which opponents found impregnable.

In the final Michael Withers scored two tries to add to his brace earlier in the tournament.

Tevita Vaikona opened the scoring, shrugging off a challenge to go over.

Second-half consolation

Leon Pryce, Nathan McAvoy and John Feeley, with a superb burst of pace, also scored tries for Bradford.

Paul Sampson made a long touchline run to go over for Wasps but it was by that time a mere consolation.

But the London side did at least finish with a flourish with Josh Lewsey touching down after a well-worked try.

The Bulls had earlier beaten defending champions the British Army 31-5 in the semi-finals.

They ran in five tries against the Army, who had looked very impressive themselves earlier in the competition.

Wasps looked a little jaded in their final match after having to battle hard to edge out London Irish 10-7 in the semi-final.

In the quarter-finals, Bradford thrashed Gloucester 42-12.

It was a sweet victory for the Bulls' Robbie Paul over brother Henry, who plays for Gloucester.

In their first match, the Super League champions beat Leeds Tykes 24-5.
