Gloucester end trophy wait

Bristol 23-28 Gloucester

Gloucester held off West Country rivals Bristol in a tense finale to the Zurich Championship at Twickenham to claim their first trophy in 20 years.

The boot of fly-half Ludovic Mercier ultimately proved decisive as the Frenchman punished Bristol indiscipline with seven penalties.

He also converted a first-half try from man-of-the-match Jake Boer to finish with a 23-point personal haul.

Bristol outscored the favourites on the try count with second-half scores from Agustin Pichot and replacement prop Paul Johnstone.

But it was Gloucester who maintained their composure in a dramatic last 10 minutes to put the seal on a highly successful season.

Third in the Zurich Premiership, they ensured all four top sides in the league ended with a trophy, while victory also gave them the second seeding for English clubs in next year's Heineken Cup.

With Gloucester leading 22-13 with eight minutes left, Johnstone's try, converted by fly-half Felipe Contepomi, saw Bristol close to within two points.

But a second needless penalty conceded by former England lock Garath Archer allowed Mercier to relieve the pressure with his sixth penalty.

And despite Contepomi maintaining his 100% kicking record to again narrow the gap to two points, Mercier's final penalty three minutes into injury-time brought relief to Gloucester.

They led 16-6 at half-time after asserting themselves with the game's opening try six minutes before the interval.

Forward surges from Rob Fidler and James Forrester took play into Bristol's 22, where Henry Paul's cut-out pass made the extra man out wide.

Prop Patrice Collazo, just back from the sin-bin after a high tackle on Pichot, found himself out on the left wing and his inside pass sent Boer over.

Mercier converted and stretched the lead to 10 points with the final kick of the half after Archer was penalised for trampling on James Forrester.

The Frenchman had earlier given his side a 6-0 lead with two penalties in a scrappy opening quarter, before Contepomi replied with two of his own.

Bristol wing Phil Christophers joined Collazo in the sin-bin after 26 minutes for cynically holding back Tom Beim.

But both sides struggled for forward momentum as Gloucester's centre pairing of Terry Fanolua and Robert Todd thwarted Bristol's best attacks with a series of crunching tackles.

Fanolua came closest to a second Gloucester try just before the hour when he was held up over the line by a superb tackle from Bristol flanker Michael Lipman.

And despite the promptings of Pichot and Contepomi, the conquerors of Leicester and Northampton could not quite muster the fire necessary to seriously threaten Gloucester's grip on the match.

Jamie Williams did escape the smothering Cherry-and-Whites defence after 49 minutes with a searing break that left Daren O'Leary for dead, but the left wing was brought back for a foot in touch.

Johnstone's 30m charge from a line-out gave Bristol a lifeline in the final stages, but Gloucester's defensive discipline ultimately prevailed.
