Gloucester winger James Simpson-Daniel faces a fitness test this week which could rule him out of England's summer tour to Argentina.

Simpson-Daniel has shot to prominence with a series of dazzling displays in recent weeks.

However, the Yorkshire-born flyer picked up an ankle injury playing for England against the Barbarians.

As a result, he missed Sunday's 33-11 Zurich Championship semi-final win over Sale at Heywood Road, and Gloucester coach Nigel Melville still is not sure whether he will be fit to travel.

"We thought it was just sore but it is a bit worse than that," said the former England scrum-half.

"It is not broken and there is no ligament damage but it wasn't worth taking a chance today and jeopardising anything in the future.

"It is too swollen to run just now but he will have a scan during the week and we'll take it from there."

In Simpson-Daniel's absence, Tom Beim took his chance, grabbing the final try as Gloucester repelled a second-half Sale rally to reach their first Twickenham final since 1990.

It was a sad way for Sale to end their campaign, and possibly life at Heywood Road after 110 years.

Club owner Brian Kennedy is to continue with plans for a summer move to Bury and a deal could be concluded within a month if the financial plan stacks up.

"Ideally we would have liked to stay but we can't," Kennedy said.

"We need a ground with 12,000 seats which is easy to get to, with good facilities where we can build an atmosphere.

"If it makes sense we will try to acquire Bury and Gigg Lane. There is still some way to go but we would expect to have an outcome within a month."

All that is of little concern to Gloucester, who have single-handedly salvaged the derided end-of-season play-offs.

With Bristol advancing to the final on Saturday, the Kingsholm outfit would expect to have almost 20,000 travelling fans backing them.

"To lose two semi-finals in one season would have been clumsy," smiled Melville.

"We know it would be tough but maybe Sale's motivation might have been slightly different after winning the trophy last week."

Sale coach Jim Mallinder admitted it was "one game too far" for his shattered side, who can now enjoy their summer before preparing for a new campaign.

"I have some happy memories of Heywood Road and it will be a shame to leave," he said.

"It's a tremendous place to play rugby but the club needs to progress."
