Mark Jones had a tough night against Owain Ashman |
Caerphilly 33-20 Llanelli Caerphilly ran riot at a near-deserted Virginia Park to stun the reigning champions with a four-try display.
It was only the Cheesemen's second league win over Welsh opposition in two years, but they did it with a typically exciting, attacking performance in the difficult, windy conditions.
Llanelli will plead the absence of a host of stars on a Six Nations weekend, but there were 11 full internationals in their squad.
It was a frenetic opening, home wing Owain Ashman getting the scoreboards rolling with a fifth-minute try.
The score was an embarrassing one for Llanelli's returning Welsh squad member Mark Jones, who was soundly beaten one-on-one by the ex-Cardiff back.

The Cheesemen stunned the visitors with another length-of-the-field move, and from the resultant scrum five full-back Sione Tuipolutu nipped over on the blindside. Some weak tackling at the other end of the pitch allowed makeshift Llanelli fly-half Neil Boobyer to cross in the corner, making it 10-5 after just 15 minutes.
The Scarlets' full-back Barry Davies found himself handed the place-kicking duties. He missed the conversion, but was successful with a penalty in front of the posts to narrow the half-time gap to two points.
It was down to our attitude, we came here thinking we could just turn up and win Llanelli coach Nigel Davies |
More worrying for Llanelli was a first-half wrist injury suffered by hooker Marcus Thomas. He was replaced by former Wales Under-21 flanker Aled Gravell; with Robin McBryde a long-term injury, the number-two position is becoming a real problem for the Scarlets. Caerphilly were on fire in the second half, veteran wing Geraint Lewis latching on to a Neil Boobyer kick for their third try.
Luke Richards, making his first start at fly-half for five months, converted, then landed two further penalties to take the Cheesemen nearly out of sight.
 Davies scored a last-minute consolation try |
Tuipolutu put in a grubber in the 64th minute, allowing Lewis to sneak in for his second try, converted by Richards. There was a late rally from the visitors, Jones making amends for his earlier error with a fine solo try, converted by Davies.
Any thoughts of a comeback were ended by Richards' third penalty, but with the last move of the match another Welsh squad member, Leigh Davies, crossed for a consolation try.
The forwards were absolutely outstanding. We can build on this |
Llanelli coach Nigel Davies said after the game: "It was down to our attitude, we came here thinking we could just turn up and win. "We felt we'd prepared well enough but didn't get the set-piece right. We're extremely, bitterly disappointed and it's a harsh lesson."
Caerphilly's two-try wing Geraint Lewis added: "We got the tactics right and shut them out of the game.
"The forwards were absolutely outstanding. We can build on this."
