| Friday, 31 January, 2003, 08:26 GMT Montgomery breaks Steelmen ![]() Newport lock Ian Gough was in the thick of things Welsh Premiership Ebbw Vale 15-37 Newport Percy Montgomery inspired Newport to victory for the second week running as a super-charged second-half performance overpowered Gwent rivals Ebbw Vale. Last week the former Springbok scored 17 points against Pontypridd, and he did even better at Eugene Cross Park with 27 against the Steelmen. Montgomery romped across for his first try for his new club and landed five penalties, two conversions and a drop goal.
Newport trailed 15-6 at the interval, but swept their Welsh Premiership rivals aside in the second half, scoring three tries and 31 unanswered points. Montgomery put Newport on their way with a third-minute penalty and added another 10 minutes later. But Vale replied with a Bryan Shelbourne penalty and then they rocked Newport by taking the lead. Shelbourne made a fine break and the pack had Newport in real trouble at a five-metre scrum, winning a penalty try which Shelbourne converted. Vale had seized the initiative and they scored their second try when the lively Shelbourne kicked into space and flanker Tyron Morris pounced for the try. Raced clear Newport showed the Black and Ambers meant business in the second half by scoring a great try after eight minutes, when half the side handled and Montgomery crossed in the corner. Newport regained the lead seven minutes later when a poor kick by Vale replacement Mark Meenan was seized by Matt Mostyn who raced clear for scrum-half Ofisa Tonu'u to score, which Montgomery converted. Montgomery then launched the move that led to the next try, firing out a long pass to Jonathan Pritchard. The ball was transferred to Shane Howarth, who worked a scissors move with Alex Cadwallader for the wing to cross for his first try for Newport. But the full-back then landed a stunning 45-yard drop goal and added two more penalties for good measure to complete the rout.
