| Friday, 3 January, 2003, 20:53 GMT Scarlets underline supremacy in west ![]() Matthew Watkins crosses for his first-half try Llanelli 45-23 Swansea Llanelli warmed up for next week's Heineken Cup showdown against Bourgoin with a convincing demolition job of west-Wales rivals Swansea. They scored six tries to the visitors' three, and a superb kicking display from fly-half Stephen Jones added 13 points to give the Scarlets their first Welsh-league win over the Whites in five games. The result proved that October's crushing 62-6 Celtic League win for the Scarlets was no fluke, but there were few signs of this match descending into the bad-tempered chaos of that encounter. To add to the Whites' woes, full-back Kevin Morgan, recently returned from knee-ligament trouble, aggravated the injury and could be a doubt for Wales' forthcoming Six Nations campaign.
Garan Evans and Mark Jones went close and back-row man Dafydd Jones lost the ball over the line. Swansea thought they could relax after hacking clear downfield, but from the next move scrum-half Guy Easterby broke clear deep in his own half. Llanelli kept the ball alive well to feed supporting flanker Simon Easterby who crossed in the corner for a converted try. Moments later Gavin Henson - taking severe stick from the Stradey crowd after his sending off in the last game between the sides - put in a loose clearance kick. Barry Davies returned a dangerous up-and-under, regathered, and the Scarlets drove on.
Two Henson penalties got Swansea on the scoreboard, but from the restart the fly-half missed a one-on-one tackle with Leigh Davies. The Llanelli captain sped through and fed Matthew Watkins who strolled over for the simplest of tries. Henson's Jekyll and Hyde performance continued as his break set up a chance for Matthew Robinson in the corner. It looked like Mark Jones bundled him into touch before he grounded, but the try was awarded and Henson converted superbly from the sideline. The second half opened in the way of the first with a series of furious Llanelli assaults and some desperate Swansea defence. The visitors' efforts cost them the services of Morgan and Christian Balshen, injured after putting in heroic hits.
Swansea battled on, but from a 65th-minute line-out Dafydd Jones piled over for another converted try. If Llanelli needed any motivation to heap the agony on their old rivals, it was provided when Henson hit Mark Jones with a heavy, but fair, tackle into the sideboards. Tempers threatened to boil over for a moment, but when Llanelli recovered their heads they moved back downfield for Garan Evans to add another try. The last word was left to Swansea, as a defiant last-minute move led to a Mark Taylor consolation try.
