| Saturday, 25 May, 2002, 12:50 GMT 13:50 UK Howley heads for Bath Howley: Regarded as one the best scrum halves around Former Wales captain Rob Howley looks set to be the latest high-profile Welsh player to move across the border to England. BBC Sport Online understands that Wales' most capped scrum-half is close to agreeing a lucrative deal to join Bath. The 31-year-old has long been linked with a move to The Rec, but Bath's interest seemed to cool after Howley was carried off the pitch with a knee injury while playing for Cardiff last month. However, Howley has this week been given the all clear by a knee specialist and Bath appear to be satisfied with the medical reports.
Team manager John Allan confirmed the club were close to signing three players - which included a scrum-half. But he said the club will not name the players until the deals are finalised. Howley, who has one year left on his current contract with Cardiff, would bring with him a wealth of experience. This season, he became Wales' most capped scrum half when he won his 57th cap in the Six Nations match against Scotland. He was selected for the last two Lions tours and is still regarded as one of the best scrum halves in world rugby.
The club already has two Welsh scrum halves in their ranks in the form of Gareth Cooper and Andy Williams. Both are currently injured, and Cooper could well find himself moving in the other direction to take Howley's place at Cardiff. Another former Wales captain, Jonathan Humphreys, has already signed a two-year deal to join Bath from Cardiff. And his former Wales and Cardiff team-mate Craig Quinnell will play for Saracens next season. |
