Newport made certain of a place in next season's Heineken Cup and preserved their slim Welsh/Scottish League title hopes in dramatic style at Hughenden on Friday night.

The Black and Ambers looked destined to plunge to another defeat, only for unsung scrum-half Llyr Lane to emerge as the hero with the clinching try in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Glasgow had opened in stirring style with two Calvin Howarth penalties, before the visitors began to string together some threatening raids.

Flanker Jason Forster was allowed time and space to scoop up the ball and surge into enemy territory.

He had support in abundance and Matt Mostyn - playing at centre instead of his usual wing berth - was left with a stroll to the posts, presenting Shane Howarth with a simple conversion.

Again Glasgow were rocked by a sucker punch from the Welshmen.

Shane Howarth was the creator with a half-break, before sending Mostyn in for another cruise to the line, the fly-half again landing the conversion kick.

Glasgow came back into the contest with their first try when Newport's defence took its turn to dither, allowing Calvin Howarth to wriggle over after a slick exchange of passes with Jonno Stuart.

But the joy of the home fans was quickly subdued as Shane Howarth thumped over a penalty at the other end.

Interval replacement Tommy Hayes was quickly in the limelight, bagging his 1000th point for Glasgow.
