Jones too hot for Glasgow

Llanelli 40-14 Glasgow

Llanelli were often below their best but were still streets ahead of under-strength Glasgow and won with ease to retain their Welsh-Scottish League top spot.

They had the match won within the opening quarter-of-an-hour with converted tries by strong centre Leigh Davies and speedy wing Mark Jones.

That built a handy lead which was never really threatened by the visitors.

  Scoring details
Llanelli (17) 40:
Tries: M. Jones (3), L. Davies, Finau.
Cons: G. Bowen (3).
Pens: G. Bowen (3).
Glasgow (6) 14:
Tries: Steel.
Pens: Howarth (3).
Att: 3,500
The Scarlets dominated much of the possession and territory and should have had more to show for almost constant attack.

But their finishing seldom matched the threat of their approach work, much of it from long range.

Glasgow, without many of their big names, were grateful for their opponents' generosity as they spent most of a frantic first half under heavy pressure.

They had to rely on the goal-kicking of fly-half Calvin Howarth to keep them in touch.

Llanelli's Scott Quinnell is stopped by Graeme Beveridge
Scott Quinnell returned to action for Llanelli
Llanelli captain Scott Quinnell spent 10 minutes in the sin bin for killing the ball and the visitors began to get back into the game.

Earlier, Jones had crossed for his second try within a minute of the re-start but Quinnell's departure gave the Scots a brief chance to make a game of it.

Their best period of attack paved the way for a good try by wing John Steel.

But Llanelli, back to full strength, soon ended Glasgow's hopes as Jones went on to complete his try hat-trick and Bowen's kicking did the rest.
