Jones double sinks Scarlets

Swansea 35-9 Llanelli

Rhodri Jones claimed two tries as Swansea threw the formbook out of the window to notch a season's double over old rivals Llanelli.

The Scarlets went into the game with a six-point lead at the top of the Welsh/Scottish League, but were destroyed by a Swansea side who had previously struggled all season.

Jones, in only his second game back after breaking a leg, struck for a touchdown in each half to crown a fine individual performance.

His second try, in particular, was a peach. The scrum-half broke from a scrum 25 metres out, dummied the defence and had the pace to claim the score.

After losing skipper Scott Quinnell to injury before half-time, Llanelli folded in the face of a display of fire and commitment from the Whites, who were led superbly by Scott Gibbs.

As Swansea piled on the agony late on, Arwel Thomas crossed in the corner to finish with a match haul of 20 points.

Swansea led 17-9 at the break after a storming first half inspired by Gibbs.

The triple British Lion made his presence felt all over the field with trademark tackling that checked Llanelli's attempts to achieve momentum.

He also scored the first try, carving through after excellent work from Thomas, Kevin Morgan and Steve Winn.

Llanelli kept in the hunt with a hat-trick of penalties from fly-half Gareth Bowen.

But another strong break from Gibbs down the left hand flank set up the position from where Winn put Jones over.

Llanelli's cause was not helped when they lost Quinnell to injury minutes later, the Wales captain hobbling off as a precautionary measure after a hamstring twinge.
