Cornish prop Luke Cowan-Dickie has been given a Calum Johnston Scholarship by the Youth Sport Trust.

The 16-year-old, who is a member of the Exeter Chiefs' academy and the England Under-18 squad, will be given £2000 to aid his progress in the sport.

England U-18 coach John Fletcher said: "Luke's a very talented young player.

"Out of all the squad we felt he was the one that would benefit most from the extra assistance because of his circumstances and where he lives."

Fletcher added: "He'll sit down with [academy manager] Robin Cowling and the Exeter Chiefs, his college and his parents and come up with a plan to support him in priority areas, whether that is in nutrition, transport or with equipment."

The Calum Johnston Scholarship is awarded every year by the Youth Sport Trust to young athletes in athletics, canoeing and rugby.

Calum Johnston died in 2005, aged 14, and the scholarship is given to youngsters who show promise in one of his favourite three sports.

The other scholarships for 2009 went to sprinter Jodie Williams from Hertfordshire and Bristol kayaker Ryan Westley.
