Paddy Wallace acknowledges the home support after the win over Bath |
Coach Brian McLaughlin has called on his Ulster side to build on their superb opening victory over Bath in the Heineken Cup. The province go to Edinburgh on 17 October buoyed by a fine 26-12 home win, but also aware of their poor away form in European competition. "We will go there with confidence but it is up to us to build on this performance," said McLaughlin. "It was a great night and I was pleased we did not let them cross at all." Ulster lost at home to Edinburgh earlier in the season in the Magners League. They need to get revenge to stay on course to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since they memorably won the European competition in 1999. "That defeat was really disappointing because I felt we played well enough to win. "However, against Bath it was great that we closed the game out. "It was pleasing the way we kept the scoreboard ticking over in the second half and did not let Bath get a bonus point. "There were a few times in the first half when we got into good positions in their 22 and gave away soft penalties. "But that is nit-picking because overall it was an outstanding performance." Bath head coach Steve Meehan believed his side paid for second-half mistakes. "I felt our first-half performance was very good, and the guys were confident in the changing room, but unfortunately for us we made one or two errors which put us on the back foot," he said. "As a result, Ulster fed off our errors and played well. "We just had to deal with too much pressure and they really played well with a solid set-piece and great percentage play. It was a typical Ravenhill performance from them. "For us, it is one match out of six, and it is really too early to say what impact it will have."
