Robins saw his side recover from an opening day defeat |
Malvern turned in a superb display to stun League Three Midlands favourites Kenilworth at the weekend. After losing their opening game of the season Malvern responded with a 29-15 victory on Saturday. After the game, Malvern director of rugby David Robins told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "Nobody expected us to come up with this result today. "It's a tribute to the coaches and players that we were entertained with a gutsy performance." Adam Dixon put the ball through the uprights to give Malvern a fifth-minute lead, before Jay Martin ran in an excellent try, which was ably converted by Dixon. Adrian Hales ran in a try for Kenilworth before the break, and a further try from Gareth Renowden levelled the scores at 10-10. | These lads will put themselves on the line for each other, which is all we can ask from a bunch of lads who are a real team Malvern coach Andy Longley |
But within five minutes Malvern's debutant centre Ed Binham went over under the posts to give Dixon a simple conversion. A kick ahead was chased down by Robinson for another try as Malvern went 12 points clear. With their tails up, and roared on by the sizeable crowd, Malvern continued to attack, winning a five-metre scrum which led to a penalty try with the visitors' Ian Phillips picking up a yellow card. Dixon's conversion put the game beyond Kenilworth, although they did score a consolation try. Head coach Andy Longley told BBC Hereford & Worcester he was justifiably happy with the outcome: "Today we put into practice all the hard work from the training field over the summer," he said. "The pack gelled, the backs tackled and harried and linked up well with the forwards to put in a true team performance. "I'm very excited by the potential of this young side, with a couple of older heads to guide them. "There is a wonderful spirit in the dressing room, as good as that shown by our side of 10 years ago. "These lads will put themselves on the line for each other, which is all we can ask from a bunch of lads who are a real team."
