Canada are the first country to come through qualifying for the 2011 Rugby World Cup after beating the United States in a play-off. They won the second leg of the tie 41-18 in Edmonton to give them a 47-30 aggregate victory. The Canadians overturned a 12-6 defeat from the first leg to join hosts New Zealand, France, Tonga and the Asian qualifier in Pool A. The All Blacks and Tonga will get the tournament under way on 9 September. | 606: DEBATE |
Canada have played in every edition of the World Cup, but have only made it through the group stages once - in 1991 before losing to New Zealand in the quarter-finals. There is still a chance for the United States to book their place in the competition, but they will need to beat Uruguay in the second Americas qualifier. The winner of that match will join Australia, Ireland, Italy and Europe 2 in Pool C, while the loser will have another chance to qualify through the cross-continental final place play-off in 2010.
