Shaw handed two-week suspension

British and Irish Lions lock Simon Shaw has been handed a two-week ban after being cited for foul play in the third Test against South Africa.

The Wasps forward was sin-binned for putting his knee into the back of Springboks scrum-half Fourie du Preez.

Australian referee Stuart Dickinson showed Shaw the yellow card in the 37th minute of the game at Ellis Park.

Shaw's ban will start in August which means he is set to miss the opening games of the new Premiership season.

The 35-year-old is the second Lions player to be punished on their 10-match South Africa tour - Scotland forward Nathan Hines received a one-week ban for a dangerous tackle during the 13-13 draw against the Emerging Springboks in Cape Town.

Judicial officer Alan Hudson of Canada met Shaw in Johannesburg on Sunday to determine his punishment.

Hudson is the officer who presided over the citing hearings of South African pair Schalk Burger and Bakkies Botha after the second Test.

Burger was banned for eight weeks for making contact with the eye area of Lions wing Luke Fitzgerald, while Botha was banned for two weeks for dangerous charging which left Lions prop Adam Jones with a dislocated shoulder.

In a controversial move, South Africa's players and coaches wore white armbands featuring the word "Justice" during the third Test as a protest against Botha's two-week suspension.
