On the stroke of half-time Jamie Roberts is penalised for obstruction allowing Frans Steyn to cut the gap to 18-6 much to the delight of many in the Loftus Versfeld crowd
The Lions endure a bruising start to the second half and see props Gethin Jenkins and Adam Jones both forced off with injuries
Another fine kick from Jones extends the visitors' lead but they are swiftly pegged back by Bryan Habana who crosses soon after the hour
Replacement Morne Steyn converts and then sends over a penalty to put the Springboks a point behind only for Jones to relieve the pressure with a penalty of his own two minutes later
With the injuries mounting and energy running low, the tourists go behind for the first time in the 74th minute when Jaque Fourie evades Tommy Bowe to score in the corner
McGeechan's side come again and look to have earned at least a draw when the exemplary Jones levels the scores, but an error by Ronan O'Gara allows Morne Steyn to win it with a last-gasp kick of his own
The 28-25 win sees South Africa take an unassailable 2-0 lead to also wrap-up victory in the three-match series
The devastated Lions players must now regroup and head to Johannesburg for next Saturday's final Test at Ellis Park where only pride will be at stake
