Borthwick's captaincy has been criticised by sections of the media

England skipper Steve Borthwick says he is determined to beat Scotland in the Six Nations on Saturday so he can give them a lesson in winning graciously.

Scotland won last season's Calcutta Cup match at Murrayfield, and Borthwick is still bristling at their reaction.

"They won fair and square, but that result hurt me and every Englishman.

"There are certain things I won't forget after that game. They made no disguise in rubbing in the fact they had beaten England," said Borthwick.

"After Sunday's game against France, we won and we were pleased with our game but I would like to think we handled that win in a gracious manner.

Speaking on Wednesday Scotland coach Frank Haddon dismissed Borthwick's comments.

"I've no idea what he's talking about," Haddon told BBC Scotland.

"If he was to be a bit more specific, we'd maybe have some idea of what he's referring to but at the moment we've no idea."

An England win at Twickenham could be enough to secure second place in the Six Nations table, although it would depend on the result between Wales and Ireland in Cardiff.

Scotland have not won at Twickenham since 1983 and coach Frank Hadden is under pressure to fulfil the minimum target of two championship victories set by the Scottish Rugby Union.

England, meanwhile, top the try-scoring charts and are coming off the back of a stunning 34-10 defeat of France on Sunday.

"It was a low point for me," says Borthwick, who was under pressure for the captaincy and his place in the side before a more assured display against France.

"We are all proud to be involved with English rugby and that wasn't a good day.

"It showed just how difficult it is to play against Scotland, how they can get wins. We need to make sure that never happens again.

"More importantly, we need to build on our performance from the weekend. For 50 minutes, it was very good before it dropped away.

"What is exciting is that we beat a very good side but we underperformed in the second half of that game. The great positive is we can say, 'just how much better could we be?'"
