Ulster's full international centre Rob Dewey has been included in Scotland's squad for the Rugby World Cup Sevens.

Coach Stephen Gemmell has also been boosted by the return to fitness of former captain Scott Forrest ahead of the Dubai tournament on 5-7 March.

Scotland will be captained by Colin Gregor, who appeared at the previous Rugby World Cup Sevens in Hong Kong four years ago.

Jim Thompson also returns after a period focussing on club rugby.

He is one of four Edinburgh players in the 12-man squad, while Gregor is one of three representatives from Magners League rivals Glasgow Warriors.

Along with Dewey, Scott Riddell plays his rugby outwith Scotland, for English Division Two side Blaydon.

Rob Dewey is a big physical player with full international experience and has shown he can perform at the highest level.

The remaining three - Ayr's Forrest, West of Scotland's Roddy Grant and Hawick's Rory Hutton - play for Scottish Premiership sides.

Scotland's Sevens side face South Africa, Canada and Japan in Pool C of the tournament in Dubai.

And Gemmell said: "It gives everyone a lift to bring someone like Rob Dewey into the squad. He is a big physical player with full international experience and has shown he can perform at the highest level.

"It's also a massive boost to have Scott Forrest back.

"His involvement speaks volumes for his determination and the tremendous amount of work he has put in with the medical staff since he suffered a dislocated, fractured ankle back at the beginning of November.

"As for Jim Thompson, he is back following a period focusing on 15-a-side rugby with Edinburgh.

"He played in every tournament last season and showed he is an effective line-breaker and ultimately a game-breaker."
