South Africa lost against the touring Lions in 1997 |
South Africa stars Schalk Burger and Bryan Habana are targeting next summer's Lions series. Winger Habana told BBC London 94.9: "The Lions at the end of the day is a long-term goal for me from about five years back. "I'd really love to be a part of that Springbok team and make a huge contribution," added the winger. Burger said: "It's something I've always dreamt of. You only get one shot at it, so hopefully we can take it." Habana was 14-years-old when the Lions beat the Springboks back in 1997 and he is relishing the prospect of playing a part in the series. "I was very new to the game then and didn't really know the history of the Lions," said the 2007 International Rugby Board player of the year. "Seeing this amazing team that Martin Johnson brought to South Africa was really exciting for me as a youngster. "I do remember '97. It was a great time in South Africa. We were world champions, there was a lot of expectation. "If it wasn't for Jerry Guscott's drop-goal the outcome might have been different." Current Springbok flanker Burger experienced the last tour to South Africa first hand. "I was at Newlands when we lost the first Test," he said. "It's special and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Obviously we all want to be a part of it." Speaking after he had featured in the Barbarians' 18-11 defeat by Australia at Wembley, Burger also refused to rule out coming to the Guinness Premiership in the future. "I'll play in South Africa as long as I enjoy it but you can never rule out moving overseas," he said. "I would love to one day come here and play here a few seasons and experience a different culture and a different city."
