Scarlets' Euro hopes 'not over'

Scarlets coach Nigel Davies refuses to accept their Heineken Cup challenge is over after Saturday's second pool loss.

The region lost 37-15 to a superior Stade Francais, and after last week's home defeat by Harlequins they have just one point from two matches.

The Scarlets face Irish province Ulster home and away in December's matches.

"We have to win all our remaining matches and hope a couple of other results go our way," Davies said. "It's not impossible."

"We are looking at it in three stages. The first stage is over now and the second stage, Ulster home and away, is going to be key for us.

"It won't just be about winning, the bonus points will be important as well."

Scarlets were losing just 9-8 at the break in the French capital after Mark Jones' superb opening try and a Stephen Jones penalty were cancelled out by Lionel Beauxis' three penalties.

But Stade upped the ante and intensity after half-time, scoring three tries in quick succession.

The first score by winger Julien Saubade was followed by captain Sergio Parisse's double in an eight-minute spell just after the interval.

"The boys will be disappointed because they know that for large parts of the game, they acquitted themselves well," explained Davies.

"There were just three moments that the opposition took advantage of.

"We have to be more clinical. The key is that when you are playing this level of opposition, mistakes will be punished."

The Scarlets went on to make one more major mistake when Beauxis, who kicked 17 points in a 22-point haul, added a fourth in the last minute after he charged down Ceiron Thomas' attempted chip.

Stade coach Ewen McKenzie on the other hand was delighted with his side's second-half display.

"The second half wasn't at all bad," he said. "The Scarlets did not play badly.

"They are a good team and this was difficult. To score that fourth try is fantastic for us.

"We changed our gameplan to a more direct style and it was perfect because we scored three tries straight off the bat.

"We spent the first half kicking a lot without applying enough pressure.

"For the season ahead, it's important to have this capability to change gameplan during a match."
