James Haskell made his England debut against Wales last year

Haskell was replaced by Leicester's Tom Croft midway through the first half of England's win over France in Paris on Saturday with an ankle injury.

The 22-year-old had an MRI scan on Tuesday which confirmed the damage.

Wasps have said that Haskell will miss Friday's game against Newcastle, but the club are optimistic about the flanker's prospects for England.

"He has begun a programme of intensive rehab with the aim of being fit and available for selection before England's match against Scotland," read a Wasps statement.

Haskell sustained the injury after his foot was trapped under a pile of his bodies, and he admitted that he had initially feared the worst.

"My knee went one way, and my upper half went the other - so when I looked down, I thought I might have an injury like (Arsenal striker) Eduardo, and that some bone might be sticking out of my sock," said Haskell.

"With the help of the England medical staff and the Wasps' medical staff, I hope I'll be back and in contention for selection."

Croft would be the likely replacement for the game in Edinburgh if Haskell proves unable to regain fitness.

Flankers Tom Rees (knee) and Lewis Moody (Achilles) were injured in the opening game against Wales as was winger David Strettle (foot) and centre Mike Tindall (bruised liver).
