Exeter fly-half Tony Yapp is still waiting for the milestone of 1,500 points for the National One club, after his side's shock defeat at Newbury. But the Chiefs record points scorer is now only seven shy following his own 10-point haul at Monks Lane.
Yapp kicked a penalty and converted the first of Josh Drauniniu's two tries as the Chiefs let slip an early 10-0 deficit to be pegged back by half-time.
But too many errors allowed Newbury two more crucial second-half tries.
It was only Exeter's fourth defeat of the National One season. But, on a day when runaway leaders Northampton stretched their 100% record with a 22nd straight league win at Esher, that leaves the Chiefs now 14 points adrift.
