Jersey Rugby Club beat Maidstone 20-18 after going ahead in the first 10 minutes and leading 13-6 at half-time. Talite Vaioleti scored Jersey's first try and, after the break, Steve O'Brien burst through the central backline to take Jersey to a 20-6 lead.
Maidstone refused to give up and dominated the last half hour when they scored two identical tries.
Relieved Jersey manager Barry George said: "Some games it's just about winning."
The 600-plus crowd at the St Peter pitch held their breath as the home side hung on to claim their 15th league victory this season.
In the final 30 minutes Maidstone's Nick Taylor went over off the back of the scrum five yards out and then winger Ian Howson did the same.
The second Maidstone try was out wide and proved too much in the conversion attempt, allowing Jersey to win by two points.
Jonny Swift converted both of Jersey's tries.
Jersey remain at the top of the division, one point ahead of Haywards Heath.
