Toulouse made sure of their place in the Heineken Cup quarter-finals with a comfortable home win over Edinburgh.

The French side started well and after Jean-Baptiste Elissalde's penalty, Vincent Clerc finished a superb break.

Edinburgh replied through Phil Godman's penalty but Clerc collected Elissalde's grubber to score while Florian Fritz's interception try made the score 22-3.

Tries from Yves Donguy and Salvatore Perugini sealed victory but Ben Gissing claimed a consolation for the visitors.

The win means that Toulouse finish top of pool six and the French champions look in fine shape to claim the trophy for a fourth time.

They started the game strongly and scored the first try after nine minutes when Fritz broke from deep and kicked ahead, causing chaos in the Edinburgh defence.

The ball was eventually kicked to the wing and Clerc was on hand to score.

Godman added three points for Edinburgh but the home side were in control and Clerc scored a second try on 36 minutes after collecting a perfectly-judged grubber from Elissalde.

Edinburgh had plenty of ball but struggled to keep possession and a wasteful offload as the Scottish side attacked led to Toulouse's third try.

Fritz gratefully accepted the pass and ran in from his own half to increase his side's advantage.

Another flowing move after the break led to a fourth, Clement Poitrenaud feeding Donguy on the wing, who juggled with the ball before running in to score.

Perugini bundled over from close range, despite almost dropping the ball on the line, and although the game was out of sight, lock Gissing finished off a move that began deep in Edinburgh's own half for a well-taken consolation.

"But we damaged ourselves by allowing them to score two breakaway tries when we had been on the attack.

"That was 12 points we handed them - and there is no way you can get away with doing that against a side of their quality."
